Travel grants
Travel Grants for Attendees of the 12th EAPC Congress in Lisbon, May 2011.
The International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC) and the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) are pleased to announce the winners of Traveling Scholarships to support their travel to the 12th Congress of the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) in Lisbon, Portugal
May 18-21, 2011.
Both organizations decided to join their grant application and selection process to increase the probability of selecting the best applicants from a varied geographical spread and with different backgrounds.
In total, 72 applications were received which meant that many extraordinary applicants had to be turned down. The committees had a difficult time selecting the final list of grantees and we hope that in the future we will be able to increase the funds to support many more applicants. Many thanks to all those who applied, for their interest and support.
The total list of the 14 grantees selected by IAHPC and EAPC are:
- Alina Conti, Pediatric Palliative Care Fellow at the Hospital Nacional Professor A. Posadas in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
- Elena Sokolova, Head of clinical department and assistant professor at Medical University, in Nizhny, Novgorod, Russia.
- Elizabeth Namukwaya, Specialist registrar, Department of Medicine College of Health Sciences at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda.
- Gladys Grance Torales, Nurse, Coordinator of Home Care Program, Pallium Latinoamerica in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
- Ioseb Abesadze, Head of Palliative Care Programs at the Cancer Prevention Center in Tbilisi Georgia.
- Lidija Veterovska Miljkovik, Palliative Care Doctor, Hospice Sue Ryder in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia.
- Maria Fidelis Manalo, Head, Palliative Care Unit, Cancer Center in The Medical City, Ortigas, Pasig City, Philippines.
- Mariana Sporis, Medical Director in "Casa Sperantei" Brasov, Romania
- Marisela Holguin, coordinator of complementary therapies, Centro de Atencion Paliativa de México (CEPAMEX) in Mexico City, Mexico.
- Natalia Carafizi, medical coordinator of hospice service and Institution Charity Foundation for Public Health "Angelus Moldova" in Chisinau, Moldova.
- Serpil Ozsezgin Ocek, Anesthesiology and Reanimation Specialist at Kaskaloglu eye hospital in Izmir, Turkey
- Sheilla de Oliveira Faria, Nutritionist at São Paulo Cancer Institute in Sao Paulo, Brazil -
- Tamari Rukhadze, Head of Palliative Care Service/Programs in the National Cancer Centre of Georgia in Tbilisi, Georgia.
- Toma Stefan, Pitesti physical therapist at the University of Pitesti, Romania
The scholarships from EAPC were possible thanks to a grant from the Open Society Foundations.
For a successful application the applicants had to fulfill the requirements of
- living in a developing country
- being active members of IAHPC
- working actively in palliative care.
- Be registered as web users at the EAPC database online (free of charge) at www.eapcnet.eu
Congratulations to all the winners for this recognition as well as for their accepted abstracts and oral presentations in the Congress. We look forward to their reports on how they will use their new knowledge and skills acquired during the congress to advance palliative care in their countries and institutions.
The reports will be published on the website of the EAPC after the congress.
